Coconino County, Arizona
Figure-Ground Contrast and Visual Hierarchy
Created a reference map of Coconino County that emphasizes the county against subdued surrounding terrain. Applied contrasting land colors, distinct water symbols, and selective labeling to establish visual hierarchy and help viewers distinguish protected lands, water features, and key geographic locations.

U.S. Statistics by State
Data Classification and Color Scheme
Created four thematic maps showing U.S. regions, total population, rural population, and unemployment-rate change. Matched classification methods and qualitative, sequential, and diverging color schemes to the data, helping viewers distinguish categories and compare patterns across the contiguous United States.

Hawai'i County, Hawai'i
Color, Texture, and Shaded Relief
Combined custom shaded relief with supporting maps of elevation, land cover, and moisture zones to portray Hawai'i County's landscape. Used terrain shading to emphasize landforms and selected color schemes suited to each theme, helping viewers distinguish land-cover categories and variations in elevation and moisture.

California Reference Map
Labeling and Typography
Created a statewide reference map of California showing major roads, cities, water features, urban areas, and protected lands. Varied label size, style, color, and placement to distinguish natural and cultural features while guiding attention through the map's geographic information.

2012 U.S. Presidential Election
Symbols and Iconography
Created a bivariate graduated symbol map of county-level results from the 2012 U.S. presidential election. Used symbol color to identify the winning party and symbol size to represent county population, allowing viewers to examine both variables together across the contiguous United States.

Mapping Across Multiple Scales
Created a map series at 1:10 million, 1:50 million, and 1:100 million to demonstrate how mapped detail changes with scale. Used feature selection, geometry simplification and smoothing, and selective labeling to preserve geographic context as the mapped extent expanded.

Arizona Groundwater Basins
Final Project: Integrated Cartographic Design
Mapped Arizona's groundwater basins by permitted water sources at active underground storage facilities, with supporting maps of land cover and mean annual precipitation. Brought together visual hierarchy, data classification, color scheme, and labeling to present Arizona's water landscape in a coordinated layout that demonstrates the cartographic skills developed throughout the course.
